Why AI Governance Matters: Gabriele Salvo's Talk for ARIC on 20 October
A 20-minute online introduction to AI governance, for ARIC on 20 October, 12:00–12:20 CEST: what it means, why it matters for organisations of any size, where the EU AI Act fits, and the first steps to take. No technical background required.

In short
On Tuesday 20 October 2026, from 12:00 to 12:20 CEST, Gabriele Salvo, co-founder and CTO of Colchix, gives an online talk for ARIC on Microsoft Teams: "Why AI Governance Matters". It is an accessible introduction to who decides how AI is used in an organisation and who is accountable when something goes wrong: what AI governance means, why it matters at any size, how the EU AI Act fits in, its building blocks (knowing which AI is in use, assessing its risks, clear policies, humans in the loop), common misconceptions and simple first steps. No technical background is required.
AI is quickly becoming part of how organisations work.
It drafts emails, summarises meetings, answers customers and writes code. Most of the time it arrives without a project plan: someone tries a tool, it helps, and it stays.
That leaves every organisation with two questions to answer sooner or later. Who decides how AI is used here? And who is accountable when something goes wrong?
Those are the questions AI governance tries to answer. They are also the subject of Gabriele Salvo's talk for ARIC on 20 October.
The talk
Why AI Governance Matters is a 20-minute online session: an accessible introduction to AI governance, for people who want to understand it rather than specialise in it.
- When: Tuesday 20 October 2026, 12:00–12:20 CEST
- Where: online, on Microsoft Teams, hosted by ARIC
- Speaker: Gabriele Salvo, co-founder and CTO of Colchix
- For: anyone curious about AI governance. No technical background required.
The talk's page has the same link and a calendar file, so the session lands in your calendar at the right hour.
What the session covers
What AI governance actually means
AI governance is often mistaken for a policy document. A policy is part of it, but governance is the whole set of decisions around AI: which systems an organisation uses, for what, with which data, under whose responsibility, and how those decisions are recorded over time.
For a fuller definition, see our guide to what AI governance is.
Why it matters for organisations of any size
A ten-person company and a multinational use the same AI tools, and the same questions follow them: what happens to the information people paste in, which answers can be relied on, and who signs off when AI touches a customer, a hiring decision or a contract.
Size changes how much structure an organisation needs. It doesn't change whether it needs any.
Where the EU AI Act fits
Regulation is part of the picture. The EU AI Act sorts AI by risk, and some of its duties already apply: AI literacy for the people who use AI at work, since February 2025, and rules for general-purpose AI models since August 2025.
The session shows how regulation such as the AI Act fits into governance, rather than replacing it.
The building blocks
The talk then goes through the core building blocks of AI governance:
- knowing which AI systems are in use, including the ones nobody approved;
- assessing their risks, for the people involved and for the organisation;
- setting clear policies, that people can follow while they work;
- keeping humans in the loop, where decisions matter.
Governance starts with knowing what is actually in use. You can't assess, decide or prove anything about AI you can't see.
That first block is where many organisations are surprised. The tools people actually use rarely match the official list: we wrote about why in What is Shadow AI?
Misconceptions, and a few first steps
The session closes with the misconceptions that keep coming up, and a few simple first steps any organisation can take, whatever its size or sector.
Why we care
At Colchix we build the operational side of AI governance. ARGUS shows which AI tools are really in use, TALOS keeps sensitive data out of them as people work, and ATHENA turns everyday activity into the evidence audits ask for.
But tools come after understanding. An organisation that knows why governance matters makes better decisions with any tool, ours included. That is why we give talks like this one, and why we built the Colchix Academy for the AI literacy the AI Act asks for.
